Ronald E. Walkington, 81, passed away peacefully Nov 19, 2022 while watching his beloved “Fighting Illini.”  He is survived by this wife of 57 years Margaret Cherwin, daughter Anne Bond (David), son Jay (Sarah) and two grandsons, Benjamin and Nathan.

After his birth in Springfield, IL his parents Agnes and Emory moved the family to East Alton IL.  Brother Phil’s birth completed the family.  Graduation from Wood River, East Alton High School led to a Navy ROTC scholarship to study Architectural Engineering at the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana.  While there he served as the Navy Battalion Commander and joined Phi Kappa Tau fraternity through which he met his eventual Bride to be playing co-rec volleyball.

With a bachelor’s degree in hand Ron served as a Lieutenant in the Navy Civil Engineer Corp for 5 years, including assignments in Washington D.C., Fort Meade Maryland and a year in Vietnam.

Upon Honorable Discharge Ron returned to the University of Illinois and obtained a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering.  In 1971, he started work in the engineering and architectural community in Chicago by joining Schousboe and Seidensticker Engineers.  In 1978 Ron joined Lester B. Knight and Associates which was bought out by M&W Zander, where he retired in 2012.  Ron worked as the Structural Engineer for Civic, Industrial, government and microelectronics facilities.  He held professional registrations in 20 states.

Ron was a generous giver of time, action and support to family and community.  He served on the St. Marks (Geneva) vestry, Lake Geneva (WI) Highlands Board, Pepper Valley townhouse board, and was a Miller at Fabyan Windmill.  Ron worked passionately for historic preservation and contributed strongly to numerous efforts through the city, county and church.

Memorial services will be held from 12-1pm, Sunday December 11th at St. Marks chapel 320 Franklin St, Geneva, IL.   In lieu of flowers please make donations to Colorectal Cancer Alliance https://www.ccalliance.org/ or the charity of your choice.

"Ron was a very special man whose talents had no end. His Christmas Erector Set creations were beyond wonderful. Our family shared the Christmas holiday for many years and when they were the hosts, the Erector masterpiece was the first thing we couldn’t wait to see along with the huge tree they cut down themselves. My sons and I will miss Ron but carry wonderful memories in our hearts."
