Gregory Christopher Berk, 75, of Geneva, Illinois, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2022 in Tucson, Arizona.

Greg was born on February 28, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, to Morris Berk, Jr and Dorothy Berk.
Greg started his fire service career with the Flossmoor Fire Department in 1967 as a volunteer firefighter. In 1978, he was sworn in as the Village’s first full-time Fire Chief, where he served for 25 years. Greg was instrumental in bringing the first transport ambulance in the Fire Department and building the current fire station. Under his leadership and vision, the Department experienced many significant accomplishments, from updating the entire fleet of apparatus to providing the Village with 24/7 staffing.

Following his retirement from Flossmoor Fire Department in 2003, Chief Berk served the City Of Wheaton as Fire Chief for ten years, until 2013. He also served as Interim Fire Chief for the Roselle Fire Department in 2015. In April of 2020, Chief Berk came out of retirement to again proudly serve the Village of Flossmoor as Interim Fire Chief for one year.

Greg was very active throughout his career, participating and serving as Past President of the Illinois Firefighters Association, and the Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department Corporation, as a founding Fire Chief of the West Suburban Fire Rescue Alliance and Tri-City planning group, as an adjunct faculty member for 16 years with Southern Illinois University, in addition to serving many other local and regional organizations.
Greg served as a model of hard work, integrity and dedication to the fire service. His passion for the fire service and the people he served will be deeply missed.

Greg is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna, his sister Marian (Richard) Schouten, three children, Rachel (Daniel) Bata, Joshua (Chanda) Berk and Matthew (Stephanie) Berk, and seven grandchildren: Jack, Ryan, Alexander, Ewan, Kerrigan, Mackenzie and Quinn.

Greg is preceded in death by his parents and brother Morris Berk III.

Visitation will be 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Yurs Funeral Home 405 E. Main Street St. Charles. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Monday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
Burial will be at Assumption Cemetery, Wheaton, Il.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department Corporation would be greatly appreciated:
