Mary J. Thomas, 92, of St. Charles, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 1, 2021 at River Glen Senior Living Community. Mary lived at River Glen only a few months and in that short time she became a favorite of the staff and nurses. Always kind and always interested in a good chat, Mary easily made friends.
She was born on Feb 1, 1929 in Oak Park, Il to Peter and Helen (Carter) Mergen and was preceded in death by her 2 brothers, Francis (Delores) Mergen of Peoria, IL, and Russell (Ann) Mergen of North Lake, IL. She married her true love, Robert S. Thomas, on Christmas Eve in 1949 and they were happily married for 58 years until Bob passed away in 2007.
A few years after getting married, Bob and Mary purchased their dream home from a kit and built the home themselves on 4 acres of land off Country Club Road in St. Charles. They raised their family and Mary lived in the home she and Bob built for over 60 years. Bob and Mary enjoyed owning several horses, lots of cats and two loyal German Shepherd dogs that Mary adored. Mary supported Bob’s goals and he reached the 32nd degree Master Mason in 1968 and a few years later became a Shriner. He was a member or 2 lodges – Berwyn and Unity. After Bob retired as an engineer for Commonwealth Edison, he spent countless hours woodworking and inventing electrical gadgets while Mary enjoyed growing a beautiful flower garden, entertaining, and collecting fine china. Her Royal Doulton “pretty ladies” figurine collection is tremendous. Both Bob & Mary were musically gifted. Bob played the guitar and Mary loved playing classical music on her piano.
Mary will be fondly remembered for her sharp wit and her amazing attention to details. She was a great storyteller, and her knowledge of history fascinated many friends. She was particularly fond of English history and the monarchy. Naturally, her favorite shows were Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs. Rather than offering coffee to her guests, she was always ready with the tea kettle.
Mary and Bob are survived by their only daughter, Helen Clemens of Chillicothe, IL and their grandson, Robert (Maggie) Jett of Atlanta, GA and several nieces and nephews. Mary had dear friends in Chris VanBroeck of St. Charles, IL and Jay & Sue Kellner of Bartlett, IL and the family is grateful for the love and support they gave Mary over the last several years.
Mary will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband. A memorial service will be held in their honor Saturday, May 22, 2021. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Yurs Funeral Home 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois 60174. A Memorial Service will follow the visitation at 11:30 A.M. Saturday. For information, call Yurs Funeral Home at 630-584-0060.

"I worked out of the Elgin ComEd Office with Bob and went to several gatherings at Bob and Mary's home in St. Charles, Mary was always a great host and full of conversation. Both her and Bob were always gracious hosts. Sorry for your loss, and Bob and her will always have a great memory in my heart."
