It is with saddened hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our son David on April 11, 2026.  He attended Geneva schools K-12 graduating in 2007.  At Geneva High School he played football where he was the starting defensive back on the 2006-2007 team. Also a member of the wrestling team he was especially proud of being All-Conference all four years.  At Eastern Illinois University he was a member and President of Sigma Pi Fraternity. He earned his JD at John Marshall Law School and was a practicing attorney in Chicago.

His livelihood may have been Law but his passion was playing guitar. Under the name Dave De La Cruz he played music in Chicago and most enjoyed playing the Blues and music by Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Santana. He loved spicy tacos (he carried a bottle of Tabasco in his glove compartment), the White Sox, and the Dallas Cowboys and always supported them in his Fantasy Football League.

For 37 years David was loving son to Clem and Susan Mejia of Elburn, IL, devoted brother to Monica Mejia of South Dartmouth, MA, half-brother to the late Benjamin Mejia of Aurora, IL, beloved nephew and cousin to  family, and cherished friend to many. He is buried in Fairmount Willow Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Willow Springs, IL alongside four generations of his mother’s family.

Dave’s many friends are gathering at Penrose Brewery in Geneva, IL on Saturday, June 20 at 4:00 to 8:00 p.m for a Celebration of Life.  Come, sip a beer, share a story and remember “The Dave” we all loved.
