Gene R. Schroeder of Batavia passed away surrounded by family at Delnor Hospital on Monday, July 31st.
He was born August 28, 1945, the first of ten children, to Gene and Gertrude (Martens) of Omaha, Nebraska. Gene landed in the retail industry soon after graduating from Creighton University and remained with DeKoven Drugs, working in several states, until 1981. In November of 1979 he married Susan Wojtas and they bought a home in Batavia. Together they started their family and he started his own construction business in 1981. The home and business have thrived for 43 years.
Nothing in life was more important to Gene than family. He loved to make Sunday breakfast for his gang and the friends they brought home over the years. He entertained all who graced his table with countless stories. He was always there to listen, to gently offer advice when asked and to lend a hand. He was a teacher who bestowed words of wisdom and led by example. His faith in God was profound and always carried him through.
Gene is survived by his wife, Susan, children Karyn Gwinn, Theresa, Janine (Chris Bauler), Matthew (Tiffany), Mary Kate (Nathan Mundell), Luke, Andrew (Michelle Busse), and Octavio Martinez, granddaughters Natalie and Kassidy Gwinn, siblings John (Joan), Patty Nanfito, Jan (Bob) Liebert, Louise, Mary Beth (Bill) Katz, Tom (Donna), Lori (Roger) Kufahl, and Jim (Roberta) as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Gene Robert III, daughter Sarah Jean and brothers Joe and Gerry.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 11th from 4 – 9pm at Yurs Funeral Home, 1771 W. State Street in Geneva. Funeral mass is scheduled for 10am August 12th at Annunciation BVM church on Church Road in Aurora.
Should you wish, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
