Jakob Jobe Swanson

July 1, 1994 – July 7, 2025

Cortland, IL

Jakob Jobe Swanson, 31, of Cortland, IL, passed away at his home on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Born on July 1, 1994, Jakob will be remembered as a gentle giant with a massive sense of humor and a magnetic personality. He was adored by everyone who came into his orbit, and his presence left a lasting impact on the lives he touched.

Jakob was a proud and skilled tradesman, working as a professional painter for the Painters District Council 30, Local 448. He took pride in his craft and was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to doing every job with care and precision. His coworkers became like extended family, and he found purpose and camaraderie in his work.

Outside of work, Jakob loved gaming, fishing with his family, caring for his plants in his nursery, and spending time with his beloved nephews. He had a unique way of making people laugh and feel at ease, and he held a deep love for his family and friends.

Jakob faced a long and difficult struggle with addiction, one that he met with honesty, resilience, and more heart than most will ever understand. Through music, especially the lyrics of Jelly Roll, he found connection and a reflection of his own battles, strength, and soul. His journey was not easy, but it was real, and he never stopped trying.

He is survived by his parents Randy and Brenda Swanson, Kristie and Jay Trapp; his sister, Victoria Swanson; and his nephews Ripley and Slater Swanson-Salerno. He also leaves behind his maternal grandfather, Bill Peterson, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who became family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jakob was preceded in death by his brother, Lukas N. Swanson; his paternal grandmother, Judy E. Swanson; his paternal grandfather, Richard G. Swanson; and his maternal grandmother, Patricia L. Peterson.

If donations are desired, the family invites contributions to the National Harm Reduction Coalition in Jakob’s memory. This organization supports the health and dignity of people impacted by drug use through compassionate services like overdose prevention, public education, and advocacy. Supporting their work is a meaningful way to honor Jakob’s life and help others who are walking a similar path.
