We are heartbroken to announce that John Morgan Mullen passed away on March 8, 2023 after a 2 year battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He was surrounded by family in his last moments.

His life began as a New Year’s baby, born in Fort Worth, Texas, the youngest of 4 children. John was a highly sought after athlete, recruited by almost every D1 football program in the country. He chose to attend Michigan State University, where his team won back-to-back National Football titles. However, those accomplishments paled in comparison to convincing his love, Jill Jonasen, to marry him. They were married June 17, 1967.

After graduation and a few starter jobs, John found a love of real estate. After stints in Michigan and Park City, Utah, John landed back in the Chicago area and was integral in converting many industrial loft buildings to residential properties. Never one to be idle, upon retirement, John turned his hobby of writing poetry into authoring three books.

John leaves behind his children, Todd (Laura) Mullen and Stephanie (Mike) Kornak, his grandchildren, Kevin (Rachel) Real, Hanna Real, Jake Mullen and Hailey Kornak and his brother, William Mullen III, in addition to Jill’s siblings, Joyce Donegan, Erik (Karen) Jonasen and Jennifer (Rick) Kulik. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and countless friends. John is preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruth Mullen, his sisters, Helen Burnard and Mary Clark, his brother-in-law, Pat Clark, his grandson, Brennan Kornak, and his wife, Jill Mullen.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to NAMI DuPage or Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. Both these organizations help to improve mental health, a cause dear to John’s heart after losing his grandson to suicide in 2019.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life service on April 15, 2023, to begin at 4:30pm at Riverside Receptions, 35 North River Lane, Geneva, IL 60134. Cocktail reception to follow the service.

Condolences

"Spent 4 years knowing John and his family in high school, particularly during pre season football practices at Central Catholic High School where we met at his house on Palmer street to relax and hydrate between two a day practices. John was a special person, a great athlete and very likable guy. I wish his family my condolences."
