Laurel L. Manthey, of Geneva, died Tuesday, September 20, after a long battle with cancer. She would have been 72 on October 3. She had lived in Geneva since 2000.
The daughter of Wilbur and Ethel Manthey, Laurel was born on October 3, 1951, in Berea, Ohio, near Cleveland.
She was a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace University, Berea, Ohio, where she earned both BA and MBA degrees.
Her first job was pumping gas at a Standard Oil gas station in Rocky River, Ohio. She rose to eventually become a Senior Buyer for that company, responsible for furnishing an entire 45-story office building. After that, she had a career in sales and marketing of industrial chemicals for several different companies. Her life changed dramatically in 1998 when she was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, an auto-immune disease that affects the muscles. This condition eventually forced her to quit working in 2006.
She loved animals and was a dedicated supporter of animal charities. She was also active in the Geneva Township Senior Center and the Fisher Farms homeowners’ association.
Laurel was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Wilbur and Ethel Manthey. She never married and is survived by one brother, Christopher Manthey, of Alexandria, Virginia. She will be interred at Lakewood Park Cemetery, Rocky River, Ohio, at a date to be determined.
Donations in Laurel’s memory may be made to an animal charity of your choice.
