Lawrence “Larry” Canale, 98, of Geneva, Illinois died February 18, 2024.
He was born July 17, 1925, in Waterbury, Vermont.
Larry is the son of Giacomo Canale and Silvia Anna (Sanson) Canale. Larry lived in Waterbury, Vermont until the age of 10 when his family moved to Italy, where both of his parents had originated. He enjoyed Italy very much and was overwhelmed with all the family that had embraced their return. As WWII began the family feared for their safety, with Italy having declared war on the US, they were now enemies living in Italy. To help save Larry’s life, they hired a smuggler to take Larry to neutral Switzerland. Larry spent the rest of the war in a Swiss internment camp.
Once the war was over and Larry reunited with his family they returned to the United States. Larry enrolled in Vermont Junior College and later completed his bachelor’s degree at Boston University. After graduation he began working in the export industry for various companies before starting his own. His work in the export industry took him all over the world. He had lived in or traveled to over 66 countries during his career.
On a business trip Larry found himself visiting Geneva, Illinois. This is where he met Evelyn Lencioni, who was the love of his life. They were married in 1970, and welcomed their only child, Julie, in 1971. Larry and Evelyn were married over 50 years until Evelyn’s death in 2021. Larry is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, parents Giacomo Canale and Silvia Anna (Sanson) Canale, and sister Mary (Pete) Martin as well as many other family and friends. He is survived by his daughter Julie (Chris) Mondi, and three grandchildren Dylan, Will, and Abbey.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 26th from 4-8:00 P.M. at Yurs Funeral Home, 1771 West State Street, Geneva, IL, 60134. The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, February 27th at St. Peter Catholic Church, Kaneville Road, Geneva, IL, 60134. The burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
