Edwin P. Brummel, 89, a resident of St. Charles, IL, passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at his home. He was born May 5, 1933, in Aurora, IL, son of Leo J. and Gertrude (Modaff) Brummel of Naperville, IL. He married Mary Ann Mittman of Wheaton, Illinois, celebrating 65 years of marriage.
Ed grew up on a farm in Naperville, IL, where he attended SS. Peter & Paul Catholic grade school and Naperville North High School. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955, stationed in Korea. After his service, he married and moved to farm in Burlington, WI and then to Platteville, IL, before settling in St. Charles, IL. Ed and his wife raised their family (and many animals and crops) on a farm off of Route 31 near Redgate Road. For many years, they had a produce stand for which his children helped run and people would come a distance as “we had the sweetest corn ever.” Eventually the family moved to the east side of town. Ed also worked at Burgess-Norton Mfg, Geneva, IL, in maintenance for over 30 years, where he was known as “Big Ed” and retired in 1995. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, American Legion 342, and Kane County Farm Bureau.
Ed and Mary Ann traveled extensively in their fifth-wheel camper, enjoying the Midwest and Southern states and visiting relatives along the way. In 2018, Ed participated in the Honor Flight Chicago in which he was overwhelmed with gratitude and in awe by this experience. Ed had a love affair with his wife’s spaghetti, home-grown tomatoes and buttered popcorn. Ramen noodles were his “fake” spaghetti, when he couldn’t get the real thing. He also loved history, going back to WWI and family history. He enjoyed a good laugh and had a charismatic smile that would light up a room.
Ed is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; two sons, Steven (Debra) and Daniel; and two daughters, Diane Brummel and Karen (Bruce) Garland. Grandchildren and great grandchildren: Katie Henschel (Lucas, Lexie, Lauren, Lana), Erin (Daniel) Flaschar (Stanley, Caleb, Jaylen, Hanna), Matthew Brummel, Christopher (Miranda) Brummel (Chloe and Claire); Alexandra (Nicholas) McCracken, Gabrielle Garland and Juliana Garland; his brother and wife, Richard (Alice) Brummel and sisters-in-law Pat Brummel and Loretta Brummel along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Joseph; his parents, Leo and Gertrude; brothers, Leo and his wife, Delores, Nicholas, Henry and his wife, Margaret, Robert; sisters, Barbara and her husband, Richard Koretke; Mary and her husband, Robert Kammes.
Visitation will be 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, December, 11, 2022 with a prayer service at 4:30 P.M. at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E Main Street, St. Charles, IL 60174. All our invited to gather on Monday, December 12, 2022, at 10:30 A.M. for Funeral Mass at St. John Neumann Catholic Church 2900 E. Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois 60174. A Luncheon be served at the Colonial Café St. Charles following the mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Edwin Brummel Memorial Fund. Charities will include St. John Neumann in St. Charles, Chicago Honor Flight, Kane County Farm Bureau Foundation, and Illinois Independent Living Center (at Katherine Manor Apartment).
