Alonzo J. Cain, Jr., age 76, of Batavia, formerly of St. Charles, IL, and Portage, IN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Accent Care in Naperville. Born on August 31, 1947, in Owensboro, Kentucky, he was the beloved son of Alonzo J. and Bethellen Cain, Sr.
Alonzo is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Dorothy; his two sons, Jason (Kim) Cain and Brad (Keith Long) Cain; and his cherished grandchildren, Grayson (fiancée Emma Boven), Michaylann (fiancé Patric Gendron), and Ella Cain. He also leaves behind five loving siblings, Michael (Janet) Cain, Wayne (Denise) Cain, Glyndona Greven, Reggie (Nancy) Cain, and Ellen (David) Dobin, along with several nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Whiting High School in Indiana, class of 1965, Alonzo excelled as a varsity swimmer. He honorably served his country in the US Army from 1966 to 1968 at North Camp Custer in Seoul, Korea, as a Specialist, 4th Class, working as a Radio Teletype Operator and Chaplain’s Assistant.
Alonzo dedicated 31 years of his life to his work as a Brick Mason at Inland Steel in East Chicago, IN. Additionally, he was a passionate Age Group Swimming Coach for 21 years in Portage, IN, where he coached over 900 swimmers, producing numerous conference champions, state finalists, and record holders, and winning several Team conference championships.
After moving to Saint Charles, Alonzo served as the president of the Renaux Manor Townhome Association for several years. He was an avid gardener and fisherman and a dedicated sports fan, cheering for Indiana University basketball, the Chicago White Sox, Indianapolis Colts, Wabash College, and UW-Whitewater.
Alonzo’s legacy of love, dedication, and service to his family, community, and country will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
