Bette Ann Scully died Tuesday November 7, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was 95 and the family matriarch. She was deeply loved by her daughter, son in-law, 3 grandchildren,11 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. Her big hugs, warm inviting style, listening ear and generous heart will be missed by all.
Bette’s father died when she was 2 and her mother passed when she was 9 so Bette and her brother Jimmy were raised by and lived with her Aunt Catherine along with her cousin Alice. These were depression years, and the family went through some tough times.
In 1944 Bette Ann Shaller married Edward James Scully in Chicago, Illinois. They had two children, Laura and Brian. The young couple lived in Chicago before moving to Downers Grove, Illinois in 1960. In January of 1967, responding to a promotion from K-Mart, the family moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan near corporate headquarters. Ten years later they moved to the Wabeek Hills community in that same town. Bette and Ed celebrated 60 years of marriage with a wonderful surprise anniversary party. Two weeks later Ed died suddenly from a stroke.
Six years after Ed passed, Bette chose to move to the Oak Crest community in St. Charles, Illinois. That was 2010. She wanted to be closer to family. Her hope was to live out her last days in her own house and with the help of her son, daughter and two amazing caregivers. She was a classy lady, and she got her wish.
Her interests included oil painting (mostly of flowers), gardening (planting annuals on her hands and knees) and travel (including many trips to Europe and the Orient mixing business with pleasure). But what she loved most was to entertain her children and grandchildren at her home in Michigan. After Ed passed, Great Grandma invited her children, spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to experience the Wonderful World of Disney at both the theme parks and the cruise ships. It was her treat for the 21 she loved most.
Bette is survived by her daughter Laura (Scully) Grim and son-in-law Denny Grim; her 3 grandchildren Kevin Grim, Kristin Grim and Heather (Michael) Bettini; 11 great grandchildren, Kyle (Callan) Grim, Heidi (Navin) Mani, Alex (Ashley) Grim, Joey Grim, Amber Grim and Kelly Grim, Jonah Grim Brown, Connor, Sophia, Chase and Cameron Bettini; 6 great-great grandchildren, Emma, Kane and Carter Grim, Annabelle and Arielle Jannette, and Brylan Hurley.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edward James Scully and her son, Brian Edward Scully and her brother James Schaller.
Visitation will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 2, 2023. It will be followed by a Memorial Service at 11:30 am inside the Riverside Community Church, 37W130 Crane Road, in St. Charles, Illinois 60175.
