Donald Ray Brown, son of Kenneth Clair and Sylvia Ann (Cervenka) Brown, was born on May 10, 1948, in Osceola, Iowa, and passed from this life suddenly on Monday, October 7, 2024, at his home in South Elgin, IL, at the age of 76.

Donald (Don) grew up in Murray, Iowa, where he worked on his family farm. He had many stories of the shenanigans he and his brothers would get into, keeping their parents on their toes. He graduated from Murray High School and moved to Illinois in 1968, seeking better job opportunities. It was there that he was introduced to his wife, Helena Huver (Helen), by his sister-in-law, who was a friend and coworker of hers. Don and Helen were joined in marriage on April 10, 1970. In 1974, they built their family home, where they raised their wonderful daughters and shared many memories, laughter, and love.

Don found his “work family” when he began his career at Burgess Norton as the lead grinding technician. He quickly became known for his work ethic, compassion, and leadership, taking on the role of materials manager in the last few years before his retirement. Throughout his career, he made a significant impact at Burgess Norton, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. He retired after 26 years with the company.

A passionate golfer, Don found joy on the course, but his true love was fishing. Many cherished memories were made on the water, where he shared his love of the sport with family and friends. He treasured the time spent watching his grandchildren at sporting events and was always their biggest cheerleader. Known for his playful spirit, Don loved to share a good joke or story, bringing laughter to all those around him.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Sylvia Brown, and his brother, Eugene Brown. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Helena M. Brown; his cherished children, Amy (Matt) Trainor, Leah (Michael) Morong, and Carole L. Varetoni; and his adored grandchildren, Emma Trainor, Kaden Trainor, Mitchell Morong, and Tyler Morong, who were the light of his life. He also leaves behind his brother Kenneth Robert (Patricia) Brown, several cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will remember him fondly.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 11, at Yurs Funeral Home from 4-7 P.M., 405 E. Main St., St. Charles 60174. Funeral service Saturday, October 12, at Yurs Funeral Home at 11 A.M., 405 E. Main St., St. Charles 60174. Burial to follow at Prairie Cemetery St. Charles.

Karen Woods Browns St Joseph from St Joseph , MO

"I am so sorry to hear of Don's passing. It sounds like he has had a good life. He was an integral part of my early years. The dear Brown family lived a quarter mile from our Woods family when we were all growing up. Bob and Don were close to my brothers, Kenny and Don. They all picked on me mercifully, but we played together and had fun. Gene was a bit younger but joined in the fun. Ken and Sylvia were good friends with my parents. I remember sharing lots of home made ice-cream and cakes. My prayers to all of the family."

Albert Family from Elburn , IL

"It is with a heavy heart that I write this. Over the years, I shared brief moments with Don, and through those interactions, I saw the beauty of the man he truly was—kind, gentle, loving, and deeply devoted to his family. While these qualities may seem common, it’s rare for them to stand out as profoundly as they did in Don. Tight lines my friend."

Beverly Vermaat from South Elgin, IL

"It is difficult to say goodbye to a neighbor of 47 yrs. My heart hurts for Helen and their wonderful, caring and close family. The love and pride Don had for his family shone through whenever he would talk about them. Hugs to you all."
