Douglas Andrew Brown, age 77, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2024, at Delnor Hospital in St. Charles, Illinois, with his family at his bedside. Doug was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on October 25, 1946, to John W. and Louise (Swan) Brown.

Doug grew up in Elgin, Illinois, where he graduated from Larkin High School in 1964. He loved music and played baritone horn in the Larkin Band; later he played trombone. Doug was looking forward to his 60th class reunion in August.

In 1968, he graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in Biology. At St. Olaf, he was on the swim team and his specialty was the butterfly stroke. In his junior year, he attended school in Aix-en-Provence, France, where he met his future wife, Diana Mignery. He and Diana were married on December 28, 1968, in Sewanee, Tennessee. Their first adventure together in their 55 year marriage was in Aviano, Italy, where Doug served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge, the couple attended graduate school at Northern Illinois University, where Doug received an M.S. in Biology.

Doug’s compassionate nature led him in his fifties to obtain an M.S.W. from Aurora University, and to a career as a Social Worker at Elgin Mental Health Center. During his last ten years at EMHC, Doug worked in Hartmann Unit, Forensics Department, where he was blessed with many friends who shared his love of good food. For over 35 years Doug was a member of St. Charles Episcopal Church, where he served as a Home Eucharistic Minister and was active in other church ministries such as Hesed House and Free Spaghetti Dinner. He treasured his friends in the L’il Boys’ Lunch Group, Men’s Group, and Tuesday Scripture Study. Doug was a member of American Legion Post 57 in Elgin.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents and beloved brother Don (Bev). He is survived by his loving and cherished family – his wife Diana, son Colin, grandchildren George and Ayla, and brother Ken (Barb); his dear friends of many years, Bill Thomas and Jim Stinson; and his very special nephews and nieces.

Doug’s family wishes to express its gratitude to the medical staff in the Critical Care Unit of Delnor Hospital for their compassionate care of Doug .

A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 10 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. Charles Episcopal Church, 994 N. 5th Avenue, St. Charles, Illinois, 60174. The funeral will be at 11:00 am at the church, with a casual luncheon to follow. Interment in the church columbarium will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to St. Charles Episcopal Church for the organ fund.
