Dr. Cynthia J. O’Brien passed away peacefully on October 10, 2021 at the age of 87.
Cynthia is survived by her children Lisa O’Brien, Doug O’Brien (Kate), and Kevin O’Brien (Nancy); her grandchildren Madeline, Patrick, Maggie, Tom, and Dan (fiancée Lauren Ellis); and many friends and colleagues. Cynthia was preceded in death by her father Otto Jason and mother Marie Jason, and by her sister Anita Jason Walk. Cynthia grew up in Chicago, graduating from Holy Family Academy, Loyola University, and the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, one of only three of women graduates in the class of 1959. Her remarkable medical career began as an anesthesiologist at Evanston Hospital and Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, where she became chairman of the department. While many physicians would have been satisfied with this achievement, Cynthia undertook a second residency in psychiatry at Loyola University Medical Center, earning Resident of the Year honors and teaching at Loyola. She practiced throughout the western suburbs, not only in her own office but at Central DuPage Hospital and its Behavioral Health Services, Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, and numerous area nursing homes. Cynthia continued to counsel patients until earlier this year. In addition to her accomplishments in medicine, Cynthia was a tremendous athlete. After playing basketball and volleyball in her youth, she became an A-level tennis player, winning many club titles. Later in life, her passion transitioned to the golf course, where she enjoyed playing with friends and competing well into her 80s. Cynthia loved her patients and colleagues, the Cubs, and her family (especially her grandchildren). Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 28 from 4-8 pm at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to NAMI of DuPage County, IL (https://namidupage.org/ or NAMI, 115 N. County Farm Rd., Wheaton, IL 60187), Lazarus House (https://www.lazarushouse.net/ or Lazarus House, 214 Walnut St., St. Charles, IL 60174, or a charity of your choice.

"I am so sorry to hear of Dr. O'Brien's passing. I worked with her at BHS for 8 years and during that time I got the pleasure of getting to know her as a person not just as an amazing doctor to so many. She forever left her mark on me and I will never forget her rough on the outside but so kind on the inside personality. I feel honored to know her and just wanted the family to know she will never be forgotten. We spent many hours talking about our families and I know she loved her's dearly. Thank you for sharing her with me"
