Edith Murlen (Foster) Horton, 83, of St. Charles, died peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, surrounded by her four children. Edith was a loving and devoted mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all whose lives she touched. Edith was born August 18, 1939, the daughter of Leon “Pete” Foster and Martha (Lantz) Foster. She married Carl “Ray” Horton on December 28, 1958, at First Lutheran Church of Paxton. She is survived by two sons, two daughters and two sisters; Scott (Michele) Horton of St. Charles, Doug (Wendy) Horton of Geneva, Jan (Jennie) VanDerHeyden of Maple Park and Debbie (Ralph) Williams of Maple Park; 9 grandchildren Stephanie, Katie and Leah (Horton), Cayce and Chris (Horton), Abby (VanDerHeyden), and Kathy, Kelly and Ethan (Williams); and 16 great-grandchildren. Her sisters are Marie (Foster) Vliet and Carol (Foster) Kinney (Larry).
Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ray Horton, her parents and three brothers; John Foster, Robert Foster and Wesley Foster.
Edith grew up a farm girl in Paxton, IL. She graduated from Paxton High School in 1957. Soon after their marriage in 1958, Edith and Ray moved to the St. Charles area. There she lived a long and happy life, and raised their four children. Edith was a meat packer at Swift-Eckrich where she was a member of the Meat Packers union for 30 years. She was also a member of The Women of the Moose of St. Charles. Edith was known to many as “Edie” and was affectionately called “Granny” by her grandkids and great-grand kids. She loved sitting by the pool at her son’s farm with the grandkids and great-grandkids in the summer months. She also loved making surprise visits to all of them once she retired. Edith was always checking in with everyone she knew and always enjoyed spreading a little joy into everyone’s lives in any way she could. From birthdays, special occasions, high school and college graduations and everything in between, she was a strong, positive presence in all of her grandkids’ lives.
