Eileen Altman, formerly of Manteno, died peacefully at home on Friday, August 20, following a brief period in hospice care.

The daughter of Glen and Lillian Parker, (Phyllis) Eileen was born on March 22, 1925 in Kinmundy, IL. She married Edward Altman on October 2, 1949 in Manteno.

Eileen and Ed lived in Manteno until 1964, when a transfer sent them to Dixon, IL. They returned to Manteno in 1968 and remained there until 2013, when they moved to the western suburbs to be near their daughter’s family. Both Eileen and Ed worked for the Illinois Department of Mental Health before retiring from Manteno State Hospital.

Eileen was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was always generous in her willingness to help others, including delivering Meals on Wheels during her retirement in Manteno. A devoted member of her church, she served in a variety of roles over the years, including teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and engaging actively in United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Dorcas Chapter #5 of the Order of Eastern Star.

She loved playing games with friends and family and working puzzles. An avid reader, she was reading an average of four books a week until her death.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Charles Parker and her husband Edward.  She is survived by her daughter Sharon (Larry) Maholland, her grandson Michael (Rebecca) Maholland and three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Ada and Emilia.

Visitation will be held from 10 AM to noon, Saturday, August 28th at Manteno United Methodist Church, 255 W. 2nd Street, Manteno, IL 60950. The funeral service will follow immediately after. Friends and family are welcome to attend a luncheon served downstairs in the church following the service.

Donations in Eileen’s memory may be made either to Manteno United Methodist Church at the above address or to the St. Charles Public Library Foundation, 1 South 6th Ave, St. Charles, IL 60174.
