Gerald J. Mertes age 79, of Geneva passed away January 13, 2018 at Delnor Hospital. He was born to John and Alice Mertes in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After graduating from Mankato State University, Gerald joined the Navy and served proudly on the USS Forrestal. He married his wife Kathy Foulkes on October 2, 1965, and they raised their family in Geneva. He was an insurance underwriter for over 30 years for Farmers Insurance Group.
He is survived by his loving wife Kathy, three sons; John (SusanYurs-Mertes) Mertes, James Mertes, Dr. Scott (Michelle) Mertes, five grandchildren; Marisa, Jack, Colin, Emma, Camryn, sister Dorothy (George) Goff, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William (Joan) Mertes.
A Memorial Visitation will be 4-8:00 P.M. Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Yurs Funeral Home 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles, IL 60174. Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 19, 2018 at St. Charles Episcopal Church 994 N. 5th Ave. St. Charles, IL 60174. Burial will be at Union Cemetery, St. Charles, IL.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Charles Episcopal Church or Wounded Warriors Project.
