James E. Byrne (Jim) passed away at home on April1, 2023.  Born to James R. and Caroline Byrne in  Danville, Illinois, he lived most of his adult life in St. Charles with his wife Janice and son David, but eventually added a second home in Upper Michigan.

A 1963 graduate of North Central College, Jim took pride in his membership and leadership of the Alumni Association.  His tenure as President of the group led him to a term on the college Board of Trustees, an honor he cherished.  His love for the learning prompted him to continue his studies at Northern Illinois University. At NIU, as a member of Pi Delta Kappa International chapter 0100, Jim served in the officer rotation which culminated in the chapter Presidency.

Jim taught at St. Charles High School from 1968 through 2000.  While much of that time was spent in the classroom, he eventually moved into the library as a research specialist where he assisted both students and faculty with research projects.  Twice he was part of the Chrysler Corporation design teams which brought back large cash awards to the school.  In addition, Jim coached a variety of sports, among them track and soccer.

He was active in Boy Scouts of America.  He served as Assistant Scout Master in Troop 25, St. Charles, attended numerous camping trips and worked at two National Jamborees. His awards included Wood Badge and Silver Beaver.

Jim’s belief in public service led him to a thirty-year tenure on the Zoning Board of Appeals, twenty-five of them as President.

In Michigan he belonged to the North Woods Philatelic Society and Wood Bee Carvers.

He is survived by his wife, Janice, and son, David.

Visitation will be Monday, April 10 from 4:00 to 9 PM at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, St. Charles. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 11 at United Methodist Church, Geneva.   Burial will be private.
