James Michael McLaughlin, affectionately known as Jim or Jimmy, passed away suddenly on July 28, 2024, at his home in Chesterton, Indiana. He was 58 years old. Jim is survived by his beloved daughters, Beatrice and Molly, and his cherished son, Martin James, known as Bear. He was preceded in death by his father, Martin Joseph McLaughlin.
Born on April 28, 1966, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Jim was the fourth child of Barbara and Martin McLaughlin. His siblings include Kathleen McLaughlin, Patty (Thomas) Swanson, and Martin (Kathleen) McLaughlin Jr., and 5 nieces and 3 nephews and a grand nephew. Jim attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School in St. Charles, The Elgin Academy, and Saint Joseph’s University in Rensselaer, Indiana. As a successful sales executive in the chemical manufacturing industry, Jim took immense pride in the service he provided to his customers and distributors. Jim’s other achievements, included his scholarships to high school and college for soccer. In his coaching years his accomplishments included recruiting and assisting players to receive scholarships to attend various universities in the Midwest.
Jim’s greatest pride and joy however were his children. He was a dedicated and loving father who immersed himself in every aspect of their lives. Beatrice and Molly, his talented and effervescent daughters, were the light of his life. Jim reveled in their accomplishments and supported them unconditionally, celebrating their milestones with the same enthusiasm he had for his own pursuits. His son, Bear, was his constant companion and confidant. The bond they shared was extraordinary, with Jim often marveling at Bear’s growth and finding endless joy in their time together.
Jim was more than a parent , he was a mentor, cheerleader, coach and steadfast supporter. His presence at soccer games and other activities was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his children. He instilled in them the values of responsibility, perseverance, and joy, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
An active and vibrant individual, Jim was known for his sense of humor, excellent voice, and dancing skills that brightened every room. His love for soccer started
at Elgin Academy and continued as a member of Saint Josephs University. Jim coached soccer at the club, HS and collegiate levels. Jim was not only committed to his family, but to all the individual players he coached and their families as well. At Christmas, Jim could be seen often in a Santa Suit carrying on his father’s tradition of community service. When with friends and family at local sporting events, family gatherings or restaurants he was often found sharing stories, laughter, singing Karaoke and making those around him smile.
Jim’s legacy is one of profound love and dedication. He cherished his parents, Martin and Barbara, and lived his life with a deep sense of gratitude and joy. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched. His horseshoe talents, and body surfing prowess will be missed by all who knew him from St. James beach.
A visitation will be from 3:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday, August 4, 2024 at Yurs Funeral Home 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles, 60174. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday August, 5th 10:30 A.M. at Saint Patrick Downtown Church, 400 Cedar Street, Saint Charles, IL followed by a celebration of life at Aurelio’s restaurant in Geneva, IL. Jim’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Misericordia Home in memory of James McLaughlin.

"I am still shaken with Jim’s passing. I met Jim at St. Joseph’s College our Junior year and had many great times. Upon meeting Jim you can’t help but like him. Since graduation I would see Jim at reunions and it was obvious how much fatherhood meant to Jim.Condolences to Jim’s family, I will be thinking and praying for you all during this tough period."
Jim Coleman from Freehold, NJ
"Please accept my condolences to Jimmy’s passing. I believe, because I am not sure, the Jimmy and I went to grade schools at St Patricks. If this is the correct Jimmy, his dad (jimmy looks just like his dad) coached us in basket ball. I lived on Horn street and we had a birthday party where my mom made Beer can crochet hats for us (HEHE). Not sure why today I was looking up my St Pats buddies, but I did and am heart broken to learn this news. My families prayers go out to you and your family. Jim Coleman"
