Jerry (Papa) Edward Damascus, age 76, of St. Charles passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Delnor Hospital in Geneva with his wife and children by his side.

He was born on June 18, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward and Helen Damascus.

Jerry loved his wife, family, friends, golf, bowling, selling paper, retirement, traveling, sports, and enjoying a good cigar in his backyard with his dogs.

Jerry married the love of his life, Carol, in Detroit on January 27, 1973.  It all started in the summer of 1971 at Jack and Jill Dude ranch in Rothbury Michigan.  For their 50th anniversary, Carol and Jerry traveled to Hawaii to celebrate.  To quote Carol from their anniversary. “Jerry will always be my soul, my heart, my life.  Through laughter, through tears we survived even though many thought it would not work.  Jerry is the Calm.  I am the Storm”

Jerry was a mentor and best friend to his kids Holly (Robert) Shive and Doug (Meghan).  He was a loving and patient Papa to his five grandkids, Braedon, Boden, Teagan, Avalon and Logan. Friend, uncle, cousin to many. And a devoted ball thrower to his furkids Trouble and Bandit.

Jerry graduated from Northwestern University in 1969 where he studied business after receiving a golf scholarship.  Jerry started playing golf with his dad when he was 3 and this led to countless memories with his kids, friends, and golf leagues.  Jerry also enjoyed bowling and loved his bowling league and friends and was incredibly proud of his 300! No matter what sport was on TV, he would be watching it (alternating with financial reports of course!)

Jerry was in the paper business for 44 years retiring from Midland Paper in 2017. He will be remembered not only for his briefcase, but also for his incredible work ethic.

To know Jerry Damascus was a blessing.  Jerry will be remembered for his humor, what a great guy he was, his patience, and his love for his family and his friends. Jerry will never be forgotten.

Please help his family celebrate his life on Thursday, December 12 from 4-8 P.M. at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles, IL.

Funeral mass will be Friday, December 13 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 East Main Street, St. Charles, IL.  Burial will be at Union Cemetery, St. Charles, IL.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Anderson Animal Shelter in Elgin, IL.

Condolences

BILL BLOCKER from MILFORD, MI

"I had the honor of working with Jerry during much of his career in paper. He was a gentleman. He was honest. He was hard working, extremely detailed and successful. He was a pioneer in his field. He had a great sense of humor and a remarkably calm demeanor. He was a great teammate will be missed. To Carol, Doug, Holly and family my sincere condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers."

Ronald DeSimone from Kildeer, IL

"Jerry was an innovator in his field. When others applied the brakes on opportunities in a niche category of the paper industry, he accelerated to excellence. His analysis of lease versus buy in automotive ownership was beyond compare. We all had much to learn from him by sharing time and space in the workplace. He did things the old-fashioned way, by earning it. Now, he can rest honorably."
