Joann (Vanthournout) Schuppenhauer, age 80, of St. Charles IL, passed away peacefully on May 27th, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born Oct 4, 1945, in St. Charles, IL.
Joann was a Loving wife, beloved mother, cherished grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend.
She made her home in St. Charles, where her warm smile, thoughtful nature, and kind heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
She had a special fondness for giraffes and collected more than 100 of them in every size and style– stuffed or not, made of concrete, wood, crystal or glass. Giraffe photos, paintings, music boxes and even a 6 ½ foot concrete giraffe in front yard brought her great joy and sparked many conversations and smiles.
She worked at Walmart as a sales associate and at Ontario Die USA as an administrative assistant.
Joann loved to travel and embrace new adventures. In 2000 she spent three memorable months exploring Canada & Alaska on 2 motorhome caravan tours. She also looked forward to spending winters in Arizona, enjoying the sunshine, making lasting friendships, and creating treasured memories along the way
She loved people. She treasured time spent praying with family, friends, her caretaker, or even strangers.
She is survived by her beloved husband, William; Her children, Brian (Ronda)
Lucas of TN and Cindy (Lee) Lucas of FL; her grandchildren Jon Lucas, Joe Lucas, Sam Lucas, Olivia Lucas, Branden Sorensen, Bradley Sorensen, Kayla Sorensen and Jesse Sorensen; 4 great grandchildren; and her brother, David Vanthournout.
She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Martha Vanthournout and siblings Albert Jr., Gerald, Roseann, and her twin sister Diane.
Joann’s family is grateful for the opportunity to have been by her side in her final moments, surrounding her with love and comfort.
Though she will be greatly missed, her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. “Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day.”
A visitation will be held for Joann on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 East Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois 60174. A funeral mass will immediately follow at 11:00 A.M. with a luncheon at the church after mass.
