John Francis Vicha, 83, died with the strength and dignity he lived his life on Thursday, December 11, surrounded by his adoring family in St. Charles, Il.
The eldest son of Joseph and Eunice Vicha, John was born on February 24, 1942, in Minot, North Dakota where he grew up with his brothers, Gary and Paul. After graduating from Minot State University in 1963, he then enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 20, 1964. John obtained the rank of Captain and was decorated for his service in Viet Nam.
On January 27, 1968, John married Patricia Vicha (Taubensee) in Oceanside, California and had their first child. After one winter in Fargo, North Dakota, Pat strongly encouraged John to move and in 1970 they did so, settling in Wheaton, Illinois where they had two more children and raised their family.
Wheaton was also where John began his career as an educator taking his favorite job as a history teacher and Football/Basketball coach at Edison Junior High School. After earning his Master’s from Northern Illinois University, John took a job as the Dean of Students at Batavia High School, shortly thereafter he was promoted to Vice Principal, then Principal.
In 1991 John was hired to be the Assistant Superintendent of schools for the Dundee School District where he worked until his retirement. In retirement, John continued to serve his community and returned to teaching by volunteering as a docent for the Field Museum of Natural History and at a homeless shelter in Wheaton.
John was both a disciplinarian and a comedian, a historian and a lover of nature, a teacher and ardent supporter of the underdog, and most importantly, a dedicated family man who was the beloved leader and partner to his wife of 57 years, his children, and his grandchildren, whom he absolutely adored.
Survivors include brother, Paul (Becky) of Washington; wife, Patricia (St. Charles, IL); Son, Dean (Whitney) (Campton Hills, IL); Son, Kurt (Rhodea) (Pembroke Pines, FL); and Daughter, Jennifer (Brian) Weigand (North Aurora, IL). 5 Grandchildren – Riley, Brendan, Peyton, Morgan, Sean.
John was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; mother, Eunice; and brother, Gary.
Visitation and a Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Yurs Funeral Home of St. Charles, 405 East Main Street, from 1 PM to 4 PM.
Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
