On Sunday, December 16, 2018, Joseph Paul Schmieder, loving father and devoted grandfather passed away at the age of 88 after spending the day with his three children and celebrating his beloved Chicago Bears defeat of the Green Bay Packers to become NFC North Champions. Joseph was born on March 10, 1930. He was the son of German and Austrian immigrants, Paul and Irma. The family settled in Chicago where Joseph and his younger brother Raymond attended St. Joseph’s High School. Joseph proudly served in the United States Air Force, flying in a Boeing B-29 Superfortress during the Korean War. In 2016, Joseph participated in Honor Flight Chicago where he and fellow veterans were celebrated in Washington D.C. and additionally, Joseph was recognized by the Korean Embassy for his service. Joseph was a retired Air Traffic Controller at DuPage Airport and former Tower Chief at Aurora Municipal Airport. During his life and through retirement Joseph was known for his quick wit, infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit. Joseph enjoyed traveling, Chicago’s museums, theater and sporting events (especially the 2016 World Series Cubs), dining with friends and a very active lifestyle at GreenFields, Geneva, that included being a resident ambassador. But most of all, Joseph enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his beautiful granddaughters. Joseph is survived by his loving daughter, Michelle (Mark) Fiore, his devoted son, Neil (Christina) Schmieder, and his caring daughter Amy Jo (David) Englehardt; his five cherished granddaughters: Melanie Jo Englehardt; Sabina and Sienna Fiore and Evangeline and Adelaide Schmieder; his Sister-in-law, Patricia “Mickey” Schmieder and loving nieces Laura (Schmieder) Castillo, Paula (Schmieder) Faulkner, Carla Schmieder and Marla (Schmieder) Couture along with their spouses and children. Joseph is preceded in death by his parents and brother. Memorial Services will be held 12:00 P.M. Saturday January 12, 2019 at St. Patrick Church 400 Cedar Street St. Charles.
