Kevin was born May 6, 1961 in Elmhurst, IL, to Lander Prince Phelps and Barbara H. Phelps. Kevin is survived by Cynthia Lee Phelps, his Best Friend and Wife of 36 years; three Sons, Wesley Lander, Mitchell Clinton, and Russell Lee Phelps; Sister, Karen Flaherty (Daniel); Brother, Wayne Phelps(Catherine);  Mother In-Law, Virginia Arno;  Sister in Law’s, Debora Austiff (Phillip) and Susan Wermeling(John);  Nieces and Nephews, Claire and Joseph Flaherty, Mary and Kelly Phelps, Calvin Austiff, Rachel Collico (Tyler), Quinn and Rebeka Wermeling.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Lander Prince Phelps and Barbara H. Phelps; Father-in-Law, Kenneth Clinton Arno; and Niece, Emily Austiff.

Kevin is a graduate of York Community High School, Elmhurst, IL class of 1980. He attended Lewis University in Romeoville, IL, receiving a degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology in 1983. He also earned his FAA Airframe and Powerplant License, FCC General Radio Telephone License, FCC Radar Endorsement, and PCIA/NABER Mobile Communications Technicians Certificate.  With continued education he earned a variety of aviation, technology, x-ray, security, and radio certificates throughout his career.

His life was devoted to a career spanning more than 40 years working for a number of prominent airlines, beginning with an Aviation Apprenticeship at DuPage Aviation. Then he advanced his career to the title of Aircraft Line Mechanic for Trans America, Butler Aviation, and Ground Service Inc.  With Braniff Airlines, he continued as an Aircraft Mechanic, eventually moving to Minneapolis to pursue a position as an Electrical Technician in Aircraft Avionics for Northwest Airlines. Finally, Kevin achieved his dream of working for United Airlines. He proudly devoted 35 years with United Airlines at O’Hare International Airport completing work in many fields including Aircraft Electrical/Electronics Technician, Aircraft Avionics, Aircraft Radio, and Communication Technician.  His dream of working with United Airlines continued until his untimely retirement on May 7, 2021.  His work defined him.

Having a love for baseball, he had a special place for the 1970’s A’s.  Kevin expressed his passion by teaching his sons this sacred sport, instilling in them the life lessons of commitment, determination, and a great work ethic.  For countless teams, Kevin served as a coach to his boys and their teammates. He volunteered in numerous activities and events enriching the community he lived in.  Kevin’s three boys were his world. He took great pride in mentoring, teaching, and introducing them to the interests that he loved; music, camping, baseball, swimming, fishing, electricity and radios, vehicle mechanics (particularly fond of the Ford F-150), aircraft, books, history, and hot sauce.

Special Thanks would like to be given to Lindsay, Kelly, and Carly, as well as to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, the Staff at Covenant Hospice, and all our dear Family, Friends, and Neighbors who loved and supported Kevin during his most difficult hours.
