Maria E. Gomez, age 82, of Geneva passed away Friday, December 13, 2019
at her daughter’s home in St. Charles.
She was born October 31, 1937 in Del Rio, Texas to Elijio and Elena Sanchez.
Mrs. Gomez is survived by her three children, Ruben Gomez of St. Charles, Dolores (Dan) Anderson of Louisiana, and Angela (Tom) Rothengass of St. Charles.
four grandchildren, Joshua and Tiffany Anderson, Kristen (Christopher) Powell and Rachel Rothengass, a great-grandson, Griffin Scott Powell, two brothers, Julian (Lupe) and Ricardo (Carmen) Sanchez, a sister, Rosie Hipolito and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Conception, her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Maria resided in the St. Charles and Geneva areas for over 60 years. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great nana gogogo. She worked at Delnor Hospital for over 20 years in OB/GYN Dept., often helping the doctors translate.
She was a strong, challenged and proud woman who retired two months after her husband’s death when she became blind. She attended the ICRE Center for the Blind in Chicago where she was the only graduate in her class that mastered braille. Although she was blind, she continued to be independent living in her home. She enjoyed traveling, taking walks, enjoying the outdoors and spending time with her children and grandchildren. At the age of 80-81, Maria was once again challenged when she started dialysis and had a leg amputated. She overcame those obstacles and continued to maintain her daily life. She was devoted to her faith.
Maria baptized her (3) children at St. Patrick Downtown Catholic Church. She continued to educate them in the Catholic religion. Her daughter, Angela and her granddaughter, Kristen were married at St. Patrick. Her granddaughter, Rachel, attended St. Patrick’ School and her great grandson, Griffin was baptized there.
Funeral mass will be held 10:30 A.M Thursday, December 19, 2019 at St. Patrick Downtown catholic Church, 400 Cedar Street, St. Charles. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva. Visitation will be Thursday December 19, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, (corner of Rt. 64 and Rt. 25), St. Charles. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in her name.
