Mary Angela Maher, age 76, of St. Charles passed away Friday, May 29, 2026 at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
She was born August 15, 1949 in Evergreen Park, Illinois to Robert J. and Rose M. Cummins. Proud of her South Side Irish roots, Mary also cherished a strong Italian influence that shaped her life, her home, and her kitchen. She loved to cook and care for her family, serving as the center of her family’s world.
Mary was the beloved wife of Edward Maher, with whom she shared 53 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on love, devotion, and family.
Mary’s greatest joy was having her family together, with that taking place at her table for Sunday dinners or the many family vacations, creating lifelong memories.
For 24 years, Mary was a dedicated and familiar face within School District 303, where she was proudly involved with the opening of Wredling Middle School. She also served as the St. Charles Educational Support Professionals union president, where she advocated and negotiated on behalf of members, and worked to strengthen communication with district leadership.
Outside of work, she was a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan and she was a consistent presence at her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.
Mary is survived by her husband, Edward, two children, Daniel (Amy) Maher and Kathleen (Jason) Griffey, four grandchildren, Max and Molly Griffey, A.J. and Emily Maher, two sisters, Patricia Watts and Joan (Roger) Anderson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Kathleen Greifenstein.
Funeral mass will be held 10:30 A.M., Thursday, June 4th at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 East Main Street, (Rt. 64), St. Charles. Private interment

Carole Arliskas from AURORA, IL
"There wasn't anyone quite like Mary Maher in our family She was always in charge and led her life and family with love and respect. She and her sisters Patty and Joan with 3 to 4 of us cousins started a Sunday afternoon "family" call the first month of the Covid problem and I'm so happy to say this family call is still going on strong 6 years later! We liken it to sitting around the dining room table on Sundays in Chicago for our large Italian/Irish family dinners when we were kids. She will be missed more than I can say...."
Bob Lindahl from Batavia, IL
