Mary Loretto Heisey, R.N. passed away peacefully at her home in the loving arms of her family on Thursday, February 15, 2024 following a brave battle after a recent cancer diagnosis. Cherished daughter, beloved sister, aunt, mother, grandmother and friend, she was born, one of three daughters, on January 11, 1936 in Chicago, IL to Frank A. and Mary (Wojcik) Nied.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, late Robert N Heisey III (2012), her son, late Robert N Heisey IV (2001), her parents, late Frank (1992) and late Mary (Wojcik) Nied (2003) and her sister, late Virginia (Nied) Schultz (2023). She is survived by her sister, Dolores, six of her seven (7) children, dear grandmother of eleven (11), great grandmother of twelve (12) and the fond aunt of many nieces and nephews. Her absence in the lives of so many will be deeply missed.
Mary graduated at 17 years of age as the outstanding senior in the graduating class of 1953 from Lourdes High School where she was the class president in her junior and senior classes. She was selected as the “Model Lourdian of 1952” having participated in sports and many other activities, including those activities at Saints Joseph and Anne parish where she had earlier attended the parish school.
Mary enrolled in the St. Joseph School of Nursing where she started classes in September 1953 following her graduation from Lourdes High School. Mary completed the required course of study under the guidance of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1956 becoming a Registered Nurse.
Following her marriage to Robert Newton Heisey III on February 23, 1957, Mary raised seven (7) children, Robert (IV), Jeffrey (Bruce Allen), Mary (Skelton), Lois, Kathryn, Howard (Traci) and Janet (Anthony Lopresti) while pursuing a rewarding career in nursing. Mary loved the nursing profession which was evident in her commitment to education and mentorship of the nurses she had the good fortune to work with in furthering their professional development and career advancement. In fact, four of her granddaughters followed her into the nursing profession.
Mary worked in many areas of the hospital ultimately settling into the specialty area of Labor and Delivery at the original Delnor Hospital on 5th Avenue in St. Charles, IL. Mary also worked in Home Health Care and was instrumental in the start up of Country Care, a local agency that provided in-home health care services to residents of the Fox Valley.
Mary spent her post retirement years caring for her husband, Robert, at their home in St. Charles, IL until his passing in December 2012. In the years following Robert’s death, ever the charge nurse, Mary encouraged her granddaughters in their chosen nursing profession and directed her personal care at home with much success.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at St. John Neumann Church, 2900 E Main Street, St. Charles, IL. "As we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ this Easter Sunday, I am reminded of of our mother and of the many conversations we had on a multitude of subjects. In particular, we discussed the concept of being happy and how, for some, being happy was of paramount importance to them.Mom valued happiness, not as an exclusive purpose of life. but rather the result of a life well lived. In short, for her, the purpose of life is to be useful, responsible and compassionate. Above all, it is to matter, to count for something and to have made a difference that you lived at all.It mattered that Mom lived; because of her, the world is a better place. That we grieve her loss is but one indication of how much her life mattered for so many of us."
Jeffrey Heisey from Grayslake, IL
"You don't move on after loss but you must move with. You must shake hands with grief, welcome her in for she lives with you now.Pull her a chair at the table and offer her comfort. She is not the monster you first thought her to be. She is love. And, she will walk with you now, peacefully, if you let her. On the days your anger is high, remember why she came, remember who she represents.Remember.Grief came to you my friend because love came first.Love came first.Donna Ashworth"
Jeffrey Heisey from Grayslake, IL
"Words are WandsDo not stand By my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep I am the thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain.As you awake with morning's hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight.I am the day transcending night. Do not stand By my grave, and cry.I am not there, I did not die.Clare Harner"
