Michael Edward Haskin passed away on July 4, 2021 after a courageous, albeit brief fight with esophageal cancer. He was able to spend his final days at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Mike was born in St. Charles, IL on October 23, 1953, the son of Glenn and Dorothy Haskin. He is survived by his sister Jane (Ben) Deutsch, brother Steve (Diane) Haskin, cousin Sue (Charles) Villanova and dear friend Brad Hoag. He is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews: Aimee (Tom) Lentz, Meghan Deutsch, Bridget (Kenric) Feldpausch, John (Jackie) Deutsch, Elizabeth Deutsch, Kevin Haskin, Melissa (Paul) Quick, Kyle Haskin, and Molly (Jesse) Gibbs. And many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marcia Haskin.
Mike grew up in St. Charles and graduated from St. Charles High School in 1971. He was part of four generations who worked at Blue Goose Supermarket. He then went on to graduate from Northern Illinois University in 1975, pursuing another family tradition of a career in education. After teaching middle school for two years, he began teaching at JB Nelson Elementary School in Batavia, where he impacted student lives for over 30 years, retiring in 2008. Following his retirement he was able to enjoy traveling and spending time with family and friends. In his final days he expressed gratitude for the wonderful life he had lived and for all the people that were part of it.
Mike’s absence will leave a great void. He was a devoted brother, loving uncle, attentive friend, and a constant at family get togethers. He was full of warmth, humor, and great stories. His early departure from this world will sadly leave many family stories untold. Mike will be dearly missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and his little dog Desi.
Visitation will be 4-8:00 P.M., Friday, July 9, 2021, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles, IL 60174. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 10, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 400 Cedar Street, St. Charles, IL 60174. Burial will be at Union Cemetery, St. Charles. Contributions in Mike’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

"Mr. Haskin was my teacher at JB Nelson and was an absolute pleasure. He showed me that I wasn’t as incompetent and as I was lead to believe, like some other teachers I had. He will be greatly missed by many. RIP Mr Haskin"
Shelley Best Ellerston from Pella, IA
"I grew up with Mike in the same neighborhood in St. Charles. He was my first “date” as a young teen to a dance. Dorothy was the secretary at Davis School where my mother, a good friend, later taught. I have so many childhood memories with the boys in the neighborhood! We had lost touch over the year. Interesting to know we had both gone into education! My sympathy and love to Mike’s family and friends. He was a very special guy!"
Cindy Spurgeon from Batavia, IL
"Many years ago, I worked with Mike at JB Nelson and considered him one of my dearest friends at the school. We shared many moments of laughter and I will always remember those times and Mike with a smile. He was a wonderful, caring teacher and friend. His students adored him, as did those who worked with him. He will be missed by many."
