Narvin Allen Efferson, age 92, died surrounded by his family on Sunday July 19, 2026 in Barrington, Illinois. He was born on April 3, 1934 in Livingston, Louisiana to James Wilson and Marshie Adeline (Hughes) Efferson. Narvin entered the United States Air Force at the age of 17 and devoted his career to serving his country, later serving in the United States Army until his retirement in 1974. An avid hunter and gardener, Narvin had a lifelong love of the outdoors and was happiest spending time in nature. He will be remembered by friends, neighbors, and family as a kind, generous, and fun-loving southern man who never lost that Louisiana drawl.

Narvin is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Theresa (Acee) Efferson, children: Nancy (Rolando) Bonachea, Wayne (Karolyn) Efferson, and Carol (Russell) Kerber. He was blessed with seven wonderful grandchildren: Luke Kerber, Amanda Hernandez, Kathleen VanRemortel, Vanessa Kerber, Nicholas Perrett-Efferson, Rolando Ismael Bonachea, and David Efferson. He found so much delight in his great grandchildren: Sophie Kerber, Rebecca and Caleb Kerber, Micah and Leo Hernandez, and Evelyn and Emersyn VanRemortel. Surviving nephews are Joseph Carboni and Larry Efferson as well as Carboni nieces Marshie, Sylvia, Toni, and Vonda.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Darlene Ann Efferson, parents James Wilson Efferson and Marshie Adeline (Hughes) Efferson, brother James Vivian (JV) Efferson, sister Elna Beatrice (Efferson) Carboni, and nephews: Glenn Michael Efferson, Jim Efferson, and Marvin Efferson.

Narvin’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Delnor Northwestern Medicine (Geneva, IL) and JourneyCare Pepper Family Hospice Care Center (Barrington, IL) for the care and comfort they provided during his final days. The family is also deeply grateful to his devoted caregivers: Darlene, Karmilyn, and James as well as the many others who cared for Narvin with such kindness, dignity, and compassion. Their support and loving care meant more to Narvin and his family than words can express.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
