In Loving Memory
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Susan Stahr Sanders, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and devoted educator, who departed this life on June 25, 2025, at the age of 79. Surrounded by the love of many, Susan left this world leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.
Susan was born on Derby Day, May 4, 1946 in Springfield, IL, where she grew up with a zest for life and a dream to make a difference in the world. Her journey through life was one of unwavering commitment to her loved ones, friends, and her students. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard, moved to Chicago and started her family. She was an amazing cook and always had a place at her table, in both Illinois and Missouri, for anyone who wanted to join the family for a meal filled with lots of wonderful food and laughter. Susan was devoted to her family and beloved dogs and always opened the door to an occasional wayward child that her kids brought home.
Susan’s career as an educator was one that spanned decades, filled with dedication and excellence. She touched the lives of generations of students, inspiring them to dream big, work hard, and believe in themselves. Her classroom was more than a place of learning—it was a haven where young minds were nurtured and encouraged to flourish. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, the lessons Susan imparted, the love she shared, and the life she lived will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy is a testament to the power of compassion, education, and enduring love.
Susan is survived by her three children: Charles (Michelle) Sanders of Berwyn, IL, Elizabeth (Brad) Steinhauser of West Chicago, IL, and David (Angela) Sanders of Castro Valley, CA, Six grandchildren: William Sanders, Adam Sanders, Evan Steinhauser, Katherine Sanders, Madeleine Steinhauser, and Aidan Steinhauser, who will honor her memory by carrying forward the values she lived by.
She is now reunited with her husband, Richard Dale Sanders, her parents, brothers, and many other family and friends who preceded her in eternal rest.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Rest in peace, dear Susan. May your soul find eternal tranquility, and may your memory forever be a blessing to us all.
