Susan L. Fikar | Obituary

Susan (Sue) Fikar, age 78, a longtime resident of West Chicago and Glen Ellyn, and current resident of Silverado in Saint Charles, died on December 16th, 2022. Born to Walter and Ethelyn Munson of Chicago, she was the oldest of four siblings raised in Arlington Heights in the home their father built on Salem Avenue.

Sue met her husband Jerry, who she loved deeply and unconditionally, as a teenager. After marrying, they moved to Glen Ellyn where they lived for more than 20 years, raising two daughters in a house filled with music, love, and laughter. She was a passionate working wife and mom who somehow managed home-cooked meals and helped with homework before the convenience of microwaves or Google. A lover of nature and animals–especially horses and dogs–she loved her job, a career spanning more than 25 years as an Executive Assistant for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. Once retired, she also volunteered as a tour guide at St. James Farm and monitored bluebird nesting boxes at Blackwell Forest Preserve.

Sue was a lady–through and through. She was real; a wing-woman to many who called her a friend, a co-worker, a confidant, a partner, one of the gals, and most importantly, a mom. She mowed the grass, delivered puppies, and stained furniture. She was as comfortable in a pair of high heels as she was with her hands in the mud. She was funny and loyal. She was honest and respected. She would nurture, but not baby. She had a knack for anticipating what others needed before they knew for themselves, and her quiet confidence and dependability were valued by those who knew her.

To Sue, death was a natural part of life, and we know she is at peace. She is survived by her daughter Jill (Rick) Assad and her grandchildren Dale and Abe. She wrapped them in love and laughter, and they made her insanely proud. Sue also leaves behind a sister, Pam (Rex) Hansen, and her brothers Randy and Rick Munson. She was the leader of their pack, and she loved them like a mom. Sue was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 46 years, Jerry, and her daughter Beth (Hintz) who passed in 2020. We know they are together now with family dogs Mandy, Ebony, and Phoebe.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 6th, 2023, from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Yurs Funeral Home in Saint Charles, Illinois. Words of remembrance will be shared at 4:00 PM with a special dinner for family, friends, and co-workers immediately following. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family hopes that those who wish to express sympathy for Sue will consider donating to the Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County in her memory to benefit the Willowbrook Wildlife Center, as the family had already made a special gift in memory of Sue’s daughter to Willowbrook. Gifts may be made online at dupageforest.org/friends or by check mailed to 3S580 Naperville Road, Wheaton, IL 60189. Please indicate that your gift is in memory of Susan Fikar for Willowbrook Wildlife Center and wildlife rehabilitation.
