Suzanne “Sue” Hamer, age 94, of St. Charles, Illinois, passed away on March 7, 2024. She was born on December 8, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Bernard and Niobe Sears.

Sue is survived by her 3 children: Cathy (Ken) Marsch of Lake Forest; Lisa (Bill) Rastello of Palatine; and John (Terry) Hamer of St. Charles. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Tiffany (David) Alexander, Kelly Marsch, Bill (Olivia) Rastello, Jil (Steve) McKinney, Steven Hamer, and John Hamer; and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack.

Sue earned a degree in history and a secondary degree in education from the University of Michigan, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. Sue was a secondary school teacher and Realtor in St. Charles, past commissioner of the Kane County Historic Preservation Commission, active in Kane County 4-H, P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ.

After being widowed following 35 years of marriage, Sue found joy and solace in rug hooking. She became a certified McGown teacher and shared her expertise at camps, teachers’ workshops, and rug guilds across the United States. Sue’s work was celebrated in various rug hooking publications. She also led the Prairie Star Quilt Guild in creating the Illinois State Quilt, now displayed in the Executive Mansion in Springfield.

A memorial visitation for Sue will be held on Tuesday, March 12, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles. The private burial will take place at Whitney Cemetery in St. Charles, Illinois.
