Suzanne “Suzie” C. Sheaffer (nee Dahleen) passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, August 7, after a 4-month long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The fourth of nine children, she was born in Des Moines, Iowa. She spent her childhood in Iowa, Oseo, Minn. and then finally in the Western Suburbs of Chicago where she remained for the rest of her life.

She had a 35-year-long career with the Central DuPage Hospital system as a radiologic technician. She cared deeply about her work and took great pride in receiving recognition ‘stars’ from her patients. However, she was most passionate about her volunteerism with the Girls Scouts and then with the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in St. Charles. She enjoyed traveling the world on Catholic pilgrimages with her husband, gardening, playing Scrabble, and hosting parties by her pool.

Dedicated servant of God, Suzie took great comfort in her faith throughout her illness. She told all of her caregivers and doctors that she was not afraid to die because she knew she was going to Heaven, but that she felt like she still had a lot for which to live. She was characteristically stubborn until the end, but finally found peace.

She leaves behind the love of her life and husband of 38 years, John, and their beloved five children: Greta Abers (Daniel), John Sheaffer (Shanna), Anthony Salerno (Rose), Amanda Wright (Tom), and Abigail Sheaffer. A doting ‘Nana,’ she also leaves behind 14 grandchildren – the light of her life. She will be dearly missed by three brothers, two sisters, many nieces, nephews, extended family, and scores of friends she gathered throughout her life.

She is preceded in death by her father (James), mother (Patricia), sister (Mary), brothers (Matthew and Mark), and grandson (Walter).

A visitation will be held at Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles on Friday, Aug. 12 from 4-8:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church (downtown) on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 10:30 A.M., followed by internment at Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Patrick’s Church.

Janie Lagioia from St. Charles, IL

"My sincere condolences to you John and family! I was out of town at the time of her passing, and sadly not able to be at her services. In sharing, I will never forget Suzie whispering in my ear during mass that we frequently shared together that she is kissing the cross of Jesus with her diagnosis. How amazing it must be for her to be in the presence of our Lord, as I am certain she is now."

Martha Kimbrough-Smidt from St Charles, IL

Gina King from St. Charles, IL

"My sincere condolences to your family. Today I read of Suzie's passing. She was an amazing woman. She loved to share life and always had a smile ready. I hadn't seen her since 2019, and we immediately struck up a conversation reminiscing about Girl Scouts and who was still involved and where the girls were now. It felt as if no time had passed. I will always remember her beautiful smile, unrestrained laugh and the kindness she shared with everyone. I cherish the memories we shared in Scouting. Another Angel in heaven is watching over us, praying for us and guiding us to be kind and loving people. I know her faith was strong and that Jesus welcomed her warmly. May you feel her loving presence daily."
