Upon completion of his service, he earned an MBA from Michigan State University. He worked in Washington D.C. for a number of years at the Export-Import Bank.

He was transferred to California, where he lived several years and developed clientele for the bank, perfected his skills in squash, and competed in triathlons.
In 1986 he moved back to Chicago where he was hired to be a stock broker for Blunt Ellis and Loewi, He was later hired by Dean Witter, and years later by Morgan Stanley. While on a training meeting in Milwaukee, Tom met his wife, Teresa, who was working at Robert Baird. Their shared interests sparked a conversation and 6 months later they were married.
One year later Tom and Teresa started their family with a son, and 5 more children followed soon thereafter.
Tom always wanted a big family. He got his wish.
