William Edward Meehan Obituary

William Edward Meehan, age 97 of West Chicago, passed away Dec. 17, 2021.

He was born April 25, 1924 in DeKalb, IL, son of William J. Meehan and Anna Marie (Lynch) Meehan.  William J. Meehan was an engineer for the Chicago & Northwestern RR and when the round house closed in DeKalb the family moved to Belvidere in 1925.  When the Belvidere round house closed in 1932, the family moved to West Chicago.

Bill attended St. Mary Catholic School and graduated in 1942 from Community High School.  He was Class President and a pole vaulter on the track team.  After graduation he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps during World War II.   A Paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division, he served in the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan during the occupation. He is a member of the West Chicago VFW Post 6791.  In 2016 he was proud to be selected for an Honor Flight to Washington, DC.  Upon returning to Chicago Midway, he was surprised by the reception he and the vets received and seeing three of this cheering children, Marlene, Patti, and Pam.

In 1947 he married Phyllis Irene Erickson from Iola, WI.  Phyllis was a Registered Nurse with Delnor Hospital, St. Charles where they met.  On the GI bill, he attended and graduated from Walton School of Commerce, Chicago, with a degree in accounting.  He became a partner in State Street Motor Sales, Geneva.  In 1956 he sold the business and his accounting practice to accept a sales position with American Sterilizer Company.  The family moved to Columbia, MO followed by Warrenville, IL, Atlanta and in 1961 returned to Geneva and St. Charles.  In 1982 he resigned from The Market Forge Company and started a manufacturers’ representative business specializing in health care equipment sales.

When Phyllis passed away in July, 1985, Bill sold the business to his son Mike, and retired to The Landings on Skidaway Island, Savannah, GA. But he did not stay retired.  He soon started Skidaway Golf Car Sales & Service.  Because of the golf carts he sold and serviced he made hundreds of friends.  On visits to see Dad, it seemed that everyone knew Bill.  In 2010 he decided it was time to sell his business and return to St. Charles and his growing family.

An avid golfer, he won five club championships, shot his age or better over 200 times since age 74, and had six aces.  He played over 300 courses including the most famous courses in Scotland and Ireland.  The two best-known courses were Pebble Beach and the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.   Besides golf, he loved hunting, fishing, bowling, wood working.   In recent years, he learned how to cut stained glass and create his famous ducks.  Bill also loved dogs.  First he had hunting dogs Teddy, Queenie, Gretchen and Fritz.  When he quit hunting he had small dogs Pug, Ginger, Skipper, Mia, and Murphy.   A favorite pastime was taking his companion to the dog park almost every day.

Bill was a member and Past President of St. Charles CC, Past President of the West District Golf Association, and Past President of Delnor Hospital Men’s Foundation.

Bill is survived by four children: Michael (Laura) Meehan, Rockford; Marlene (Kirk) Fisher, St. Charles; Patti (Dan) O’Brien, Geneva; Pamela (Kevin) Quinn, St. Charles; twelve grandchildren: Sarah (Tyler) Gebhards, David (Taylor) Meehan, Philip (Bridget) Meehan, Patrick (Kathy) Fisher, Colin (Barbra) Fisher, William (Danielle Aceto) Fisher, Erin (Paul) Stege, Keegan O’Brien, Liam (Amy) O’Brien, Caitlin Quinn, Thomas Quinn, Dillon Quinn; sixteen great-grandchildren, several nieces,  nephews and long-time friend, Neva Susan Lauhoff.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Special Olympics, Disabled Veterans National Foundation, or St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, St. Charles, IL
