Wyman Carey, 86, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023, surrounded by loving family. He was greatly loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, and their families. Son of Wyman Hoare Carey and Esther Gertrude DeZuck Carey, he was born on November 9, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois. Wyman met his wife Carol Carey, nee Hayden, at Bradley University, they married on February 9, 1958. They were married for 61 years when Carol passed in 2019, and he missed her dearly and honored her memory every day after her passing.
Always a talented athlete, Wyman spent his early years playing baseball, setting records as a left-handed pitcher throughout his collegiate career, culminating in the honor of being selected to the Collegiate All American Baseball Team in 1957. He spent seven years playing for several minor league teams, spending spring trainings with the Detroit Tigers system. As a result of his successes on the baseball field he was inducted into no less than three Halls of Fame: City of Blue Island Hall of Fame, Bradley University Hall of Fame, and the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame.
In his later years his athletic abilities lent themselves well to his golf game. Even though Wyman was left partially paralyzed following a car accident, he never let that slow him down. He was an inspiration to people with disabilities. To that end, Wyman became quite a legend in his community when he made an unbelievable, “One-Armed Hole in One” in 2012.
While Wyman loved sports, nothing compared to his love for his family. He was a devoted husband and loving father to his three children. After hanging up his bat, he had a successful career in medical publishing. He enjoyed travelling and making memories with his wife and family, and treasured their winters in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He also loved supporting his children and grandchildren from the sidelines at their sporting events.
Survivors include son Wyman “Clint” (Brook) Carey, and daughters Lisa (Vern) Trainor and Amy (David) Dejanovich; 8 grandchildren Wyman “Brandon” Carey, Chelsea (Nick) Valdez, Owen Carey, Jackson Carey, James “Dylan” Trainor, Sean Trainor, David “Hayden” Dejanovich, Danielle Dejanovich; and 2 great grandchildren Charlotte Carey and Santiago Valdez. He was predeceased by his wife Carol, and his sisters Marilyn (John) Collins, Marjorie Boyer, Kathleen (Jack) Haderlein, and Carol (Earle) Heinecke.
Burial service will be 11 am Friday, February 17, 2023, at Union Cemetery in St. Charles, IL.
